Project goal : To improve access to maternal and neonatal health care in the rural regions of Tanzania, where infant and maternal mortality rates rank among the world's highest. Nearly half of all child deaths in Tanzania occur during the first week of life, and most of these newborns never have contact with health care services.

Objective
1: To conduct capital improvements to
improve capacity for emergency surgical
services.
Major accomplishments to date:
- Three health centers outfitted
with essential upgrades to provide emergency
surgery, such as new operating rooms, surgical
equipment, electricity, generators and clean
water supplies.
- 26 new staff houses built in health centers to provide housing for medical staff and attract personnel to work in isolated areas.
- Three
maternity and operating theaters renovated and
equipped.
Objective 2: To increase capacity
by training midwives and non-physician health
workers, called Assistant Medical Officers
(AMOs), in surgical and emergency
medicine.
Major accomplishments to
date:
- Six midwives and
assistant medical officers assigned to upgraded
health centers and trained to perform emergency
surgery, provide anesthesia, maintain the
surgical facility, and improve delivery and
surgical/obstetric outcomes.
