Key achievement to date:
The Tobacco Control Support Center has been
established, representing 30 members. Five
trainings have been conducted in five regional
settings in this quarter.
Objective: This grant supports MPOWER goals.
Major
accomplishments to date:
- Tobacco Control Support Center established, with staff, operational materials, and management and technical systems in place. Advisory Board meetings held regularly.
- Information support center created, website and database developed to support network with evidence-based data and information.
- Press conferences organized to advance graphic health warning policy.
- Technical meetings and workshops hosted for different member groups.
- Smoke-free advocacy kit and relevant fact sheets produced and disseminated, including template on Smoke-Free Ordinance.
- Conducted tobacco control advocacy training for new organizations interested in tobacco control; participants included university representatives and NGOs.
- Two sites selected for smoke-free policy development, based on readiness to commit to tobacco control; orientation and advocacy activities underway in one site.
- Draft Tobacco Control Bill is in place but not approved for inclusion in 2007 legislation agenda or first round of 2008 agenda; advocacy with policy makers undertaken to increase public pressure on government; participated in hearing with parliament's Commission VIII to present urgency of law.
- Completed study on health warnings.
- Updated country data provided to Members of Parliament.
- Facilitated litigation plans of Consumer Organization by mobilizing lawyers' group and liaising with Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids for resources.
- Assisted network members to develop advocacy materials and campaigns.
- Conducted media campaign and press conference, resulting in 15 publications in local newspapers, two TV interviews, and several talk shows.
- Work extended to academics. Dean of the Faculty of Public Health University of Diponegoro Semarang, Central led an advocacy campaign supported by 700 students from various universities.
- Developed and hosted a journalist workshop.
- Supported competition for journalists on "Tobacco-Free Youth" theme.
- Smoke-free kit developed consisting of seven booklets.
- Fact sheets distributed during media campaign, public seminars, and training activities.
- Activities undertaken to support WNTD 2008:
quick survey on street children in slum areas
undertaken, documentary video and press release
developed.
