Key achievement to date:
Materials have been provided for media advocacy
efforts and for training people to promote
tobacco control.
Objective: This project supports MPOWER letter goal W. To Warn about the dangers of tobacco.
Major
accomplishments to date:
- Catalogued and coded 612 print media articles, and published article on results in the Mexican Journal of Public Health.
- Existing Spanish- and English-language advocacy materials collected and analyzed.
- Advocacy materials used for three media advocacy workshops to promote tobacco control policy.
- Articles used to create Mexico-specific evidence for policy arguments.
- Messaging kits disseminated to civil society partners and government partners and during World No Tobacco Day events in Mexico City and Cuernavaca; kits included information for civil society sectors not currently active in tobacco control.
- Messages adapted and uploaded on website of National Tobacco Office in the National Council against Addictions (CONADIC).
- Interviews conducted with 18 advocates and experts (15 Mexican, three from other countries).
- Report produced on media and media advocacy experiences.
- Data collection teams trained for survey of Mexico City residents, adult non-smokers and smokers.
- Survey administered to 800 Mexico City residents.
- Research report produced, and results integrated into media advocacy and training materials.
- Developed draft facilitator's guide, which outlines the structure, content and facilitator's notes.
- Piloted media advocacy workshop among three
different groups.
