Ukraine: Cigarettes are Eating Your Baby
Alive
Key achievement to date: A six-month national tobacco control mass media campaign ran at low-cost, using New York City's "Cigarettes are Eating You Alive" and "Cigarettes are Eating Your Baby Alive." The campaign received much press attention and was part of a strategy that resulted in increased tobacco taxes and warning labels approved by the government.
Objective
1: To develop a national mass media
campaign to raise awareness about the harms of
tobacco.
Major accomplishments to date:
- Campaign aired in three flights of TV on
Ukraine's First National Channel (winter
2008-spring 2009).
- Ads also ran on 17 regional channels and two radio stations.
- Billboard campaign across Kiev (spring 2009).
- Ads shown in 200 cinemas/90 cities across the country as part of a popular international film festival (spring 2009-winter 2009).
- Campaign evaluation available July
2009.
Objective 2: To gain public and
media support for tobacco control.
Major
accomplishments to date:
- Some 85 news articles ran as a result of
the campaign.
Objective 3: To gain support for
government tobacco control initiatives as part
of larger tobacco control strategy for
Ukraine.
Major accomplishments to
date:
- Tobacco tax increase May 1, 2009 (40
percent increase).
- Pictorial warning labels adopted June
2009.
