Effective communication can help people protect themselves and their families. WLF supports social marketing health communications and the best practice implementation of mass media campaigns worldwide. Through programs that are tailored to the specific needs of individual countries, these campaigns help arm the public with critical health knowledge.

Spotlight: Health Communications and Information

Giving and receiving gifts of cigarettes is a common social norm in China, and gifts of tobacco products are often offered with candies, peanuts and tea at weddings, social gatherings, and other festive occasions. According to a recent online survey conducted in China, 61.25% of respondents believed offering cigarettes to be an effective social behavior, 52% of respondents have offered cigarettes to others, and 57% think it impolite to refuse cigarettes offered by others.

This gift-giving culture is responsible for the phenomenon of extremely expensive cigarettes in China.  Cartons of expensive cigarettes are often given to friends, colleagues, and leaders as a sign of respect.

On the advent of the Chinese Spring Festival celebrating the Lunar New Year, when gift-giving reaches its peak, WLF worked with partners to support two ads, which illustrate the health harms of smoking in the context of gift-giving. These ads were supported by a nationwide poster campaign and broadcasted in major cities across China on local and national satellite TV channels, as well as on mobile media and in hospital and medical clinic networks.
