Spotlight: Health Communications and Information
Giving and receiving gifts of cigarettes is
a common social norm in China, and gifts of
tobacco products are often offered with
candies, peanuts and tea at weddings, social
gatherings, and other festive occasions.
According to a recent online survey conducted
in China, 61.25% of respondents believed
offering cigarettes to be an effective social
behavior, 52% of respondents have offered
cigarettes to others, and 57% think it impolite
to refuse cigarettes offered by others.
This gift-giving culture is responsible for the phenomenon of extremely expensive cigarettes in China. Cartons of expensive cigarettes are often given to friends, colleagues, and leaders as a sign of respect.
