International Tobacco Control Sources
Tobacco use in the leading cause of
preventable death in the world today and is
responsible for more than five million deaths
each year. The majority of these deaths are in
low- and middle-income countries, where the
tobacco industry is shifting its business.
Within 25 years the death toll will climb to
more than eight million people annually if
nothing is done.
This list of sources was compiled for journalists and advocates who seek to inform their audience about the tobacco epidemic globally, or in their own country. It includes academic, medical, economic, policy and public health experts in countries with the highest prevalence of tobacco use.
This resource was compiled by World Lung Foundation with support from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use.
