The treatment and control of asthma is a critical area of concern to WLF, as the condition affects more than 300 million people a year, many of them children and mostly in poor countries. To raise money for asthma care, WLF sponsors a team of runners who participate in the annual New York City Half-Marathon. The money raised goes to the Kenya Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (KAPTLD), which uses the money to train health care providers and patient groups to recognize asthma symptoms, to procure medicine for patients, and to evaluate treatment numbers and outcomes.
