Field Reports Blog: Turkey Smoke-free Site Visit

Monday, October 12, 2009

"In Turkey, Sylviane Ratte of the Union and I went to Izmir, Turkey's 3rd largest city of about 3.5 million, to visit with the local health directorate and find out about how Smoke-free was being implemented locally, and how tobacco control rated on the municipality's list of priorities.  We met with the General Director, they set up a meeting with the head of each inspection team, and we went on a sample inspection visit to restaurants in a waterfront mall.

It was fascinating to see how the Turks are making smoke-free work, and we were happy to learn that tobacco control has been high on the General Director's priorities for the last 5 years.  The inspection team was also really motivated to hear that the world is watching Turkey's and Izmir's success.  Of course, being Turkish, they were wonderful hosts, and also brought us to eat delicious an Izmir specialty - Fish Shish - in an outdoor cafĂ© overlooking Izmir's beautiful harbor. "
