WLF attended the 40th Union World Conference
on Lung Health, organized by our partner, the
International Union Against Tuberculosis and
Lung Disease, from December 3-7 in Cancún,
Mexico. At the conference, WLF interviewed WLF
Board Member Jane Carter about her work in Lung
health, sponsored a symposium on mass media,
and presented several poster. Details below.

Dr. Carter, WLF Board Member and Assistant
Professor of Medicine at Brown University,
spoke to us about the importance of our work in
global lung health. Here, she shares a story of
one woman who was nurtured from near-death and
now helps to fight AIDS in her home country of

Symposium: Mass Media
in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Evidence
from World Lung Foundation campaigns
330 million smokers live in China alone.
Following the conference theme “Poverty and
Lung Health,” WLF and partners presented mass
media campaigns developed in various low- and
middle-income countries with high smoking
prevalence, including China, Mexico and Turkey.

WLF presented posters at two
sessions: The first uses WLF examples to
illustrate the best-practice model for
developing mass media campaigns. The second
outlines India’s powerful smoke-free media
campaign, developed in conjunction with the Government of
