Gallery of Shame 31
This week’s #adsthatkill Gallery of Shame entry is one of the most blatant examples we’ve seen yet of a classic Big Tobacco technique – using smokers’ very valid health concerns to peddle their deadly products.
In this 1976 Lorillard ad, health concerns are not-so-obliquely referenced: Considering all I’d heard, says the fit woman pictured, I decided to either quit or smoke True. The connotation, of course, is that True brand cigarettes are a viable alternative to quitting – and somehow healthier than conventional brands. Even the name ‘True’ (like its contemporaries ‘Fact’ brand and ‘Now’ brand) has the ring of validity and scientific fact. The fact is, however, that so-called ‘low-tar’ cigarettes offer no protection from deadly health effects – in a recent study of almost 1 million smokers, rates of lung cancer were precisely the same in smokers of low-tar and conventional cigarettes. To put it simply, there is no such thing as a safe cigarette.
Given all of this, shouldn’t these cigarettes be called ‘False’?
Look for the next entry in Gallery of Shame on Wednesday, or submit your own ‘worst of the worst’ with the hashtag #adsthatkill or by emailing khamill@worldlungfoundation.org.

Gallery of Shame 30
This week’s #adsthatkill Gallery of Shame entry revisits one of Big Tobacco’s most important marketing strategies – a focus on getting young smokers hooked. In this vintage ad, we see the genesis of tobacco industry tactics that still flourish today. Note the language: “ gentle…delicate….likeable…unspoiled ” and sunny imagery, designed to present tobacco as harmless and pure. It may seem outdated, but the truth is that these themes are still echoed today , in ads that emphasize a sense of harmless fun and youthful vigor. Big Tobacco knows that they have to replace customers every year – specifically, the 6 million people that their products kill annually. They also know that smokers who start in their teens are more likely to become life-long addicts; recent studies show that 9 out of 10 adult smokers started before age 18. This ad only represents the beginning of tobacco marketing that has successfully attracted millions of ...continue reading -
