Consultant/ Writer

Background

World Lung Foundation (WLF) was established in response to the global epidemic of lung disease, which kills 10 million people each year. The organization improves global lung health by improving local capacity to conduct research, develop public policy and deliver public health education, with emphasis on tobacco control, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, asthma, and child lung health (www.worldlungfoundation.org).

As part of its programmatic work, WLF is producing the Acute Respiratory Infections Atlas (ARIA), which will serve as a resource for advocates, policy makers, journalists and public health officials and contribute to increased global awareness about the issue of respiratory infections. The ARIA will draw on available data from sources such as the World Health Organization and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), and in close work with a designated researcher and the Communications team at WLF, the consultant will be responsible for all text and narrative for the ARIA from its first to its final draft, with particular attention to enhancing the text using graphical representation (e.g. charts, maps, pull quotes, sidebars).

• Review key research findings, provided by CSO and research assistant, and provide consultation on packaging data into the most accessible and engaging formats.
• Write clear and engaging copy that highlights important and interesting  findings.
• Write introductive narratives to contextualize each section/lung health issue, as well as an introduction to the ARIA itself.
• Complete edits of text as recommended by CSO and WLF team;
• Work closely with WLF team to finalize ARIA by Spring 2011.
