3rd Cross-Strait Conference on Tobacco Control
The WLF China team attended the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (HKCOSH)-hosted 3rd Cross-Strait Conference on Tobacco Control in Hong Kong last week. The theme of this year’s two-day meeting was "Construct Smoke-free Society & Promote MPOWER." More than 200 tobacco control advocates, scholars, public health professionals, and NGO representatives from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau, gathered to share their experiences on tobacco control issues. Several international and local experts were also invited to deliver keynote presentations.
The conference opened with speeches by prominent public health and tobacco control leaders in the region, including Dr. Huang Jie-fu, Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Health and recently-inducted Chairman of the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control.
On Day 1, Judith Mackay gave a presentation on "Implementation of FCTC and MPOWER." On Day 2, I talked about WLF-supported mass media interventions in China and presented our Anti-Gift Giving and "Sponge" campaigns. A good number of conference participants – many of whom were from Macau – approached me after the session and wanted to learn more our materials and methodologies. Definitely some good discussions and, even though Macau is not one of the BI priority territories, they seemed very committed to moving towards smoke-free. Especially as next year’s conference will be held in Macau!
